What Is General Pediatrics?

What Is General Pediatrics?

Children’s primary care strives to meet the healthcare needs of infants, children, teenagers, and young adults — from birth through age 21. General pediatricians can diagnose and treat childhood diseases, infections, and dysfunctions and refer parents to the proper specialists.

NewYork-Presbyterian provides a wide range of pediatric primary care and specialty services for children and adolescents. Our expert pediatricians work with parents and caregivers to address all a child’s health needs — from routine care to the most complex health and developmental issues.

Programs for Children & Teens

Beyond essential pediatric primary care, NewYork-Presbyterian has an array of specialized programs, which focus on providing guidance and reassurance for parents, children, and adolescents.

Developmental-behavioral pediatrics

Our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and ACN clinical programs can identify potential issues and provide expert management strategies, resources, and referrals to help your child thrive.

Inpatient services

We offer family-centered inpatient care for children with general pediatric illnesses to complex medical conditions. Our state-of-the-art facilities include well-baby nurseries at multiple locations for term and near-term infants.

Community Pediatrics

Community Pediatrics partners with local organizations to improve the health and well-being of children and adolescents in northern Manhattan communities. Our programs address childhood obesity, health literacy, mental health issues, and childhood asthma; promote early literacy; and prepare middle and high school students for careers in biomedical science and medicine.

We aim to break the link between poverty and poor health — empowering families by giving them the tools to navigate local care resources, improve school readiness, and elevate the quality of life.

Specialized pediatric mental health

NewYork-Presbyterian has a comprehensive mental health program for children and teenagers, providing screenings for depression and anxiety. Our interconnected team of pediatricians, nurses, social workers, and mental health professionals ensures a holistic approach in a caring environment.

Healthy weight management

We work with children and adolescents to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, reducing the risks of certain health complications. Our centers are among only a handful in the United States approved to offer weight loss surgery to teenagers.

Child Advocacy Center

The specially trained staff at the Child Advocacy Center evaluates and treats children who have experienced abuse or neglect. Inpatient and outpatient services are provided in collaboration with law enforcement, governmental agencies, and Manhattan Child Advocacy Center/Safe Horizon services.

The Child Protection Program at Weill Cornell Medical Center evaluates and assists children who are suspected victims of physical and sexual abuse. The program is an Associate of the National Children’s Alliance and a multiborough Child Advocacy Center.

Teenage Parenting Program

The NewYork-Presbyterian & Weill Cornell Medicine Teenage Parenting Program (TAPP) provides care for adolescent mothers and their babies, empowering them to navigate the challenges young parents can face.

Complex Care Program

The Complex Care Program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center aims to provide high-quality care for children with medical complexities. The compassionate faculty and staff members help families develop and manage a comprehensive care plan for their children.

Pediatric Community Health Worker & Care Manager Programs

Pediatric Community Health Worker (CHW) and Care Manager Programs support caregivers of children with special health care requirements, providing tools to help manage their child’s condition and their social needs. Bilingual CHWs maintain a strong presence in our medical facilities and the community, giving education and support to patients and parents.

Young Men’s Clinic

The Young Men’s Clinic at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center cares for teen boys and men ages 14 to 35. The center’s services include primary care services, stress management, relationship counseling, educational and vocational services, and sexual and reproductive health care.

The Compass Program creates a safe space for transgender and gender-diverse children and teenagers. Working with a team of specialists for adolescents, the program provides mental health services, family support, puberty suppression, gender-affirming hormone therapy, and sexual and reproductive health counseling.
