About Our Program

If your child has an endocrine (hormonal) disorder, it can significantly affect their health and emotional well-being. At NewYork-Presbyterian, we understand the impact these disorders have on children and teenagers, as well as their families. We've created special programs dedicated to the care of children and adolescents with diabetes, obesity, other hormonal disorders, and metabolic diseases. Patients can have a consultation, access diagnostic services, and receive the most advanced therapies.

What we treat

We have special expertise in the treatment of hormonal disorders in young patients, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia
  • Metabolic bone diseases, including very rare types and featuring collaboration with experts at neighboring hospitals
  • Noonan syndrome and other disorders of growth and puberty
  • Thyroid problems
  • Pituitary disorders
  • Low bone mass
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), including clinical trial opportunities
  • Hormonal effects of treatments for other diseases, such as pediatric cancer

How we diagnose endocrine disorders

Endocrine stimulation testing. We offer endocrine stimulation testing to diagnose certain hormonal disorders — such as growth hormone deficiency, diabetes or poor glucose tolerance, puberty problems — and adrenal disorders — such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia. We do this test to trigger a hormonal response in your child. The test may take one to three hours and require your child to fast before the procedure. Our staff will explain the specific details of the stimulation test that has been scheduled for your child.

Bone density testing. On-site bone density testing and body composition evaluation are available for children and adolescents, and we interpret the results based on childhood norms. Our staff members are certified as clinical densitometrists by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry.

Treatments we offer

Our teams customize your child's care to his or her specific needs.

Hormonal therapy. Some children with Noonan syndrome and other growth disorders may receive growth hormones. Our specialists speak with compassion about hormonal therapy with families and children and at an age-appropriate and culturally sensitive level.

Diabetes treatment. Children living with diabetes who need insulin injections receive instruction and guidance on how to use this medication and education about diet and lifestyle to control their blood sugar and achieve the best health.

Weight management. We provide guidance about diet and exercise to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Weight loss surgery is an option for some very obese adolescents whose weight cannot be adequately controlled through other means.
