A procedure now offered by the Department of Surgery and Institute for Neurosciences at New York Methodist Hospital (NYM) is giving new hope to patients with certain types of cerebral aneurysms—blister-like bulges in the wall of a blood vessel within the brain. NYM is one of only three hospitals in Brooklyn to offer the procedure, which incorporates the breakthrough “Pipeline” stent. NYM is also the only medical center in the borough where the procedure is performed by a physician who specializes in both neurosurgery and neurointervention.

New York Methodist Hospital (NYM) recently welcomed Perry Cook, MD, as its new chief of hematology and oncology and vice chairman of internal medicine. Dr. Cook came to the Hospital from NYU Langone Medical Center, where he served for almost two decades as attending oncologist and director of the adult hematopoietic stem cell transplant program. Dr. Cook now directs New York Methodist’s Division of Hematology/Oncology and ambulatory infusion (chemotherapy) center.

A year after the successful opening of NYM's renovated Center for Sleep Disorders and pulmonary faculty practice, the Hospital''s sleep experts have now added a pediatric insomnia program to the Center's lineup of services. The program is specifically geared toward treating insomnia—difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or waking up repeatedly throughout the night—in children whose sleeplessness is due to behavioral or psychological factors.

The number of children who come to New York Methodist Hospital (NYM) for general surgery has increased by almost 50 percent in the last two years, with the Hospital now logging almost 500 cases annually.
