New York Methodist Hospital (NYM) will host the second annual Fred L. Mazzilli Lung Cancer Screening Awareness Day on Thursday, November 6, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hospital's Carrington Pavilion Atrium, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn.

The event is a component of NYM's Fred L. Mazzilli Free Lung Cancer Screening Program, which was established in partnership with the family of Brooklyn native and former Major League Baseball All-Star Lee Mazzilli, whose brother, Fred, died of lung cancer in 2012. Mr. Mazzilli currently serves as special advisor to the front office of the New York Yankees.

The event will feature free spirometry (lung function) screenings, blood pressure screenings,  an educational lecture (held at noon) and giveaways. NYM pulmonologists and respiratory therapists will be available to answer questions.

In addition, those in attendance who fit the National Cancer Institute's recommended National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) criteria may be eligible to make an appointment for a free low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan and evaluation through the Fred L. Mazzilli Free Lung Cancer Screening Program. The NLST recommends a low-dose CT screening for current or former smokers aged 55 to 74 years who have a smoking history of at least 30 pack-years and have not previously been diagnosed with lung cancer.

The Fred L. Mazzilli Lung Cancer Screening Awareness Day is free and open to the public, but advanced registration is highly recommended. To register, please call 718-780-5367. Additional information can also be found on NYM's website at www.nym.org/lung.
