Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

NewYork-Presbyterian offers specialized partial hospitalization programs for adolescents at two convenient locations:

  • The Center for Childhood and Adolescent Behavioral Health at the Westchester Behavioral Health Center in White Plains, NY (serving youth ages 12–17, and 18–20 if enrolled in a Department of Education program)
  • NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center on Manhattan’s Upper East Side (serving youth ages 13–17, and 18–20 if enrolled in a Department of Education program)

Our Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program provides intensive daily treatment for teens who need more support than weekly therapy can offer but do not require overnight hospitalization. The program helps young people stabilize symptoms, build coping skills, and return to school and family life with renewed confidence.

We care for adolescents who are experiencing emotional or behavioral challenges but can safely live at home while receiving structured, therapeutic care during the day.

Who We Help

The program may be a good fit for adolescents who are:

  • Struggling with worsening or newly emerging mental health symptoms
  • Experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide but can remain safe with a plan in place outside program hours
  • Having difficulty functioning at school or at home—such as school avoidance, social withdrawal, or increased family conflict
  • Transitioning from an inpatient stay and need continued support before returning to full-time school or community life

Our Services

Each day includes a combination of individual, group, and family-based therapies designed to support healing and skill-building. Treatment may include:

  • Individual therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Behavioral interventions
  • Psychosocial rehabilitation (including creative arts therapy)
  • Medication management and psychiatric care

The program is staffed by a dedicated, multidisciplinary team of Weill Cornell Medicine faculty and NewYork-Presbyterian clinicians who work collaboratively with each family to develop an individualized treatment plan addressing each adolescent’s specific needs and goals.

Educational Support

We understand how important it is for teens to stay connected to their education during treatment. Academic support is built into the program at both locations:

  • In Manhattan, instruction is provided onsite through the Hospital Schools Program of the New York City Department of Education.
  • In Westchester, educational services are coordinated through LearnWell Services, Inc.

This helps students keep up with schoolwork and maintain academic progress while focusing on their mental health.

Aftercare and Transition Planning

Before leaving the program, each teen and family work with our team to develop a personalized aftercare plan. This plan includes recommendations for ongoing therapy, community resources, and strategies for managing challenges at home, school, and with peers. Our goal is to ensure a smooth and supported transition back to daily life.
