NewYork-Presbyterian’s Center for Childhood and Adolescent Behavioral Health is the region’s leading provider of acute psychiatric care for children and teens. We offer both inpatient hospitalization and intensive outpatient services, thoughtfully designed to support young people who need a higher level of psychiatric care. These services can serve as a step-down from inpatient treatment or as an alternative to hospitalization, ensuring youth and their families receive the right level of care at the right time.

Established in 2025 with generous support from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation, the Center builds on NewYork-Presbyterian’s longstanding commitment to youth mental health. This expansion meets the growing challenge of escalating mental health needs among children and adolescents, increasing access to high-quality, intensive behavioral health services when they are needed most.

Located on the scenic and historic campus of NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester Behavioral Health in White Plains, New York, the Center features state-of-the-art facilities thoughtfully designed to promote healing, safety, and comfort.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

A structured, full-day program for adolescents who need more support than weekly therapy but do not require overnight hospitalization.

Ages: 12–17, or up to 19 if enrolled in a Department of Education program

The Adolescent PHP is designed for youth who require intensive daily support and do not need 24/7 supervision. This level of care is appropriate for adolescents experiencing:

  • Worsening or newly emerging significant mental health symptoms
  • Elevated risk of harm, including suicidal thoughts or moderate self-harming behaviors, with the ability to develop and adhere to a safety plan outside program hours
  • Significant functional impairment, such as school refusal, inability to engage in academic settings, high family or peer conflict, or avoidance of social responsibilities
  • Transition from inpatient hospitalization

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

A flexible program that offers therapy several times per week—ideal for teens transitioning from inpatient care or needing extra support.

Ages: 12–17, or up to 19 if still enrolled in school and stepping down from our Adolescent PHP

The Adolescent IOP is designed for youth who require more support than standard outpatient care but can attend school. This level of care is appropriate for adolescents experiencing:

  • Worsening mental health symptoms despite consistent outpatient treatment
  • Declining daily functioning at school, home, or in social settings
  • High-risk behaviors such as self-injury or frequent suicidal ideation, with the ability to maintain safety with additional support
  • Transition from inpatient hospitalization or a partial hospitalization program
