What is Telehealth?

Telehealth, which is also called telemedicine or digital health, is a way for you to connect with a healthcare provider without an in-person visit. Instead, your appointment takes place online via Internet access through your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Telehealth offers a variety of services, including speaking with your physician or nurse, sharing electronic messages with your healthcare team through a secure patient portal, and remote monitoring of vital signs for people with chronic health conditions. Telehealth is especially useful for people with minor illnesses and injuries that do not require emergency in-person care, such as:

  • Cold and flu symptoms
  • Skin rashes and infections
  • Eye irritation and infections
  • Digestive symptoms
  • Neurologic difficulties such as dizziness, headaches, and weakness
  • Breathing challenges, such as allergies and chest congestion
  • Musculoskeletal aches and pains
  • Genital or urinary symptoms
  • Feeding or sleeping issues in children

Telehealth physicians can provide treatment guidance and write prescriptions for a range of conditions, help with referrals to specialists, and issue medical notes needed for work or school. Some conditions require an in-person visit.

Telehealth Services

NewYork-Presbyterian has expanded its telehealth opportunities to support the physical and emotional health of you and your family. Our services include:

Virtual urgent care

For people in need of immediate care for minor illnesses and injuries, virtual urgent care connects you with one of our healthcare experts online or through the NYP Connect app. Care is available 7 days a week from 8 am to midnight.

Video visits

Connect with your NewYork-Presbyterian doctor and other members of your care team from anywhere you are, without needing to go into their office, for initial consultations and follow-up appointments. Your doctor will let you know if a video visit is an option for you.

Second opinions

Get a written second opinion from one of our expert physicians within just five business days. We do all the legwork for you, and no additional testing is necessary.

Intra-hospital consults

Throughout the entire NewYork-Presbyterian network, we have physicians from every specialty and subspecialty of medicine. During intra-hospital consults, physicians from different hospitals can collaborate on your case in real-time through video conferencing.

Express care

After initial triage and an in-person medical screening exam, visitors to the Emergency Departments at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital can choose to connect virtually with a provider rather than waiting for an in-person evaluation. Our goal is to shorten time spent in the ER.

Pediatric telemedicine

Virtual visits with a pediatric emergency medicine physician may be convenient for families, especially for those who have difficulty traveling, who do not have a doctor’s office or urgent care center close by, or for those needing health advice during non-business hours (weekends or evenings).

Pediatric telemedicine offers the convenience of connecting with a healthcare provider from the comfort of your home without added transportation and travel time.
