Clinical Assignment Schedules

The NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Dietetic Internship is a full-time program, in which dietetic interns maintain a full day’s schedule. Dietetic interns are scheduled to be on duty for five days per week.  The demanding nature of the program regularly requires attendance during any hours of the week (as early as 5:00 a.m. and as late as 10:00 p.m.), including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.  Dietetic interns will be scheduled on duty approximately eight weekends over the duration of the program period.  To obtain the benefits of the clinical experience, the dietetic intern’s educational schedule conforms to that of the unit’s staff.  All rotations are completed on-site across the seven campuses of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

Monthly Classes, Lectures and/or Meetings

The first three weeks of the program are devoted to general orientation to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the Department of Food and Nutrition, and the Dietetic Internship.  To supplement the educational experiences provided in clinical assignments, there is a monthly schedule of professional education and departmental meetings.  In addition to the regular schedule of meetings, dietetic interns are expected to attend a variety of professional meetings, medical rounds, and conferences, which are scheduled within the Hospital and throughout New York City.


Dietetic interns are granted nine holidays, in accordance with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital policy, during the program period.  They are:

  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Friday after Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Day
  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Presidents’ Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day

Dietetic interns scheduled on duty on a holiday will be granted compensatory time off.  In addition to the named holidays above, dietetic interns may request 3 personal days.  Also, perfect attendance is rewarded by granting up to two bonus holidays during the program period. Compensatory days off, personal days, and bonus holidays are scheduled at the discretion of the dietetic intern and with the prior approval of the Dietetic Internship Program Administrator.


Each dietetic intern receives a one-week vacation scheduled at approximately mid-term of the program.  The vacation schedule for the current class year is announced during Dietetic Internship orientation week.

Additionally, each dietetic intern receives a second week of vacation which may be taken as a week or as individual days.  These five vacation days are scheduled at the discretion of the dietetic intern and with the prior approval of the Dietetic Internship Program Administrator.
