About Transplant Services At NewYork-Presbyterian
NewYork-Presbyterian is an international leader in the transplantation of organs including the heart, lung, liver, kidney, intestine, and pancreas. Across our two transplant program campuses — NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center — we have performed the most transplant surgeries in the United States. With programs that have existed for decades, we are ranked as one of the top organ transplant programs in the country for having better than expected outcomes. People come to us from around the world for our expertise and our reputation for providing many types of transplants more quickly than other centers.
Teams of Transplant Specialists
Each patient's transplant team includes a transplant coordinator to manage all care, transplant surgeons, medical doctors with expertise in the organ being transplanted, nurses, dietitians, social workers, financial counselors, and other healthcare professionals with the compassion and skills to coordinate the many facets of transplant care. Transplantation is a major procedure. You will need lifelong care and follow-up, and we are here to provide it for you.
Excellence in Heart Transplantation
The Heart Failure and Transplantation Program at NewYork-Presbyterian is the second largest program in the country, performing more than 3000, the largest lifetime volume in the country since UNOS started tracking in 1988. We have the highest volume pediatric heart transplant programs in the country. Our heart transplant program has extended the criteria for both organ donors and transplant recipients, significantly widening the availability of organs and making transplantation an option for people who might otherwise be denied treatment.
The Nation's Largest Kidney Transplant Program
The kidney transplantation programs at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center are the oldest in the region and the largest in the nation performing more than more than 10,000, the largest lifetime volume in the country since UNOS started tracking in 1988. We have the largest living donor kidney transplant program in the United States. Our transplant specialists have pioneered novel ways to expedite the pairing of donated kidneys with the people who need them, helping more patients to receive transplants before they need dialysis.
Leaders in Liver Transplantation
At NewYork-Presbyterian, you are ten times more likely to receive a liver transplant than at other hospitals in the region. We perform the most liver transplants in the Northeast and have one of the largest Living Donor Liver Transplant Program in North America. We have completed more than 2,000 liver transplants, with outcomes that meet or surpass national averages.
The Area's Largest Lung Transplant Center
The major center for lung transplantation in the New York tri-state area — the Center for Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplantation at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia — is one of the oldest in the United States. We feature a leading lung transplant program in the Greater New York City area and one of the highest volume programs in the northeast. Our doctors are also experts in ex vivo lung perfusion, a procedure used to prepare donor lungs outside the body before transplant surgery, which increases the available pool of lung donations by restoring and repairing donor lungs that have sustained damage.
Pioneering Pancreas Transplantation
NewYork-Presbyterian has the largest pancreas transplantation programs in New York State, caring for patients with the most complex medical and surgical challenges. We offer this option in combination with kidney transplantation, enabling the transplanted pancreas to protect the new kidney from the damage caused by diabetes.
Special Support for Living Donors
The donation of kidneys and liver tissue from living donors has made kidney and liver transplantation possible for many recipients who might not otherwise be able to receive these organs. NewYork-Presbyterian has prominent living donor kidney and living donor liver transplant programs featuring dedicated teams and support services just for donors. We recognize how valuable these donations are — organs from living donors often results in better success rates after transplant — and we go to great lengths to educate and support living donors.
