Crime Prevention at NewYork-Presbyterian

Crime Prevention By Patients

In order to keep visitors and patients as safe as possible while at NYP, the Security Department asks that they follow the following security steps:

  • Send valuables home
  • Do not wear or keep jewelry with you
  • Ask visitors not to leave any property items unattended
  • Remind visitors that Security Officers are stationed at every entrance to the Hospital and will be checking identification
  • Remind visitors that Security Officers will be enforcing visiting hours

Send valuables home: Items such as jewelry, expensive clothing, or other costly items should not be brought to the Hospital. Upon admission, it is best to give all valuables to a relative or friend for safe keeping at home. If an item must be secured, please ask a nurse to arrange for the hospital's Security Office to assist you. The valuables will be placed in a "Patient Valuable" envelope and stored in the safe. You will be given a receipt for the items. If possible, arrange to prepay for TV and phone service so you will not need to keep cash on hand.

Please note:The Hospital is not responsible for any lost, stolen or damaged items that you choose to keep on your person or in your room during your stay.

Do not wear or keep jewelry with you: Please take off all: jewelry items including rings, necklaces, bracelets, watches, earrings and piercings, and send them home. Several medical tests/procedures require you to remove jewelry or metal items. Jewelry can easily get lost if placed on a countertop, in a bedside table, room closet, or on a food tray. These are not places that should ever be used to store jewelry. We understand that some people prefer not to have to take off an item such as a wedding ring and send it home, but it is in your best interest to do so.

Ask visitors not to leave any property items unattended: Visitors should not leave any items such as clothing, jewelry, handbags, cell phones, briefcases, cameras, laptop computers or other personal items unattended in the room, bathrooms or waiting lounges. Please ask your visitors to respect restrictions on cell phone or other equipment usage that may apply.

Remind visitors that Security Officers are stationed at every entrance to the Hospital and will be checking identification: Security Officers check the identification and purpose of visit of all persons entering the Hospital. Security Officers have the right to inspect bags or packages as they deem necessary.

Remind visitors that Security Officers will be enforcing visiting hours: Visitors will not be allowed to enter before, or stay after visiting hours unless permission is given by the nurse in charge of the patient care unit.

Contact the Security Department if you have questions or concerns about persons or activities involving your security: The Security Department is available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. Your questions, concerns and observations are important to us. For information or immediate assistance, please contact the Security Department:
