Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program

Obstetrics and Gynecology Conference Schedule and Lectures

Lecture and conference time is protected time for the residents. With the help of physician assistants, midwives, and attending physicians, residents are freed from routine duties in order to participate fully in the teaching program. Protected time includes:

Wednesdays 7:00am - 12:00pm

Grand Rounds

Attendance of all residents is required. Grand rounds are often scheduled on Wednesday mornings for one hour from September through June and are held in the Hospital auditorium. Speakers include many nationally prominent authorities in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.

Electronic Fetal Monitoring Tracing Rounds

On the first Wednesday of every month, 2-3 cases are presented and the electronic fetal monitoring is reviewed with both residents and faculty.

Gynecology Morbidity and Mortality Conference

Recent cases of high educational value are presented by the chief residents and discussed. This meeting is scheduled for the fourth Wednesday of each month.

Obstetrical Morbidity and Mortality Conference

Recent cases of high educational value are presented by the chief residents and discussed. This meeting is scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month.

Research Seminars

Meetings are held on a quarterly basis to discuss research and quality improvement in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. All residents are required to complete a research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor and present at the Annual Resident Research Day in the third year of training. Residents with research projects that are accepted to regional or national meetings are generally sponsored to attend, therefore, residents are encouraged to submit to local, regional, and national conferences and submit their research for publication. A statistician is available to assist residents with their data collection and interpretation.

Family Planning

The program provides access to training for all residents.

Resident Lecture Series

A series of lectures in each of the five disciplines of OB/Gyn and Primary Care are held during protected time and is based on the CREOG Educational Objectives. Opportunities to solidify medical knowledge include access to questions banks and assigned readings.

Pediatrics/Obstetrics Perinatal Case Conference

This conference is held jointly with Pediatrics for one hour on the second Tuesday of each month. The residents present an educational case with a neonatologist and a perinatologist leading the discussion.

Ob/Gyn Journal Club

Journal Club is held regularly during didactics. Journal Club allows residents the opportunity to assess the current literature and understand evidenced based medicine. The articles are chosen by program leadership and the supervising faculty member that leads the discussion.

Gynecologic Oncology Tumor Board

This meeting is scheduled as the first Grand Rounds on the first Wednesday of each month. The meeting is attended by a pathologist and radiation oncologist and chaired by the director of gynecologic oncology.

New York Obstetrical and Brooklyn Gynecological Societies

Residents are invited monthly to attend these meetings, which feature nationally prominent speakers. The department assumes all costs.

Simulation

There has been tremendous growth and demand for advanced simulation in both Obstetrics and Gynecology. In Obstetrics, we offer various drills including hemorrhage. In Gynecology, we have both laparoscopic and robotic simulation to improve your surgical skills and prepare for the required FLS examination.
