A holistic approach to weight loss management

Understanding that weight loss is influenced by a number of factors in an individual’s life, our center takes a holistic approach that considers all aspects of your health and lifestyle when developing a plan to achieve your weight goals. We are here to support your weight loss journey with helpful lifestyle interventions, including educational sessions for you and your caregivers, wellness support, nutritional guidance, and long-term follow-up care.

Weight loss management interventions

The benefits of a high-quality diet, physical activity, and behavioral change can extend beyond the sometimes frustratingly small changes on the scales, so lifestyle management remains the foundation for improved health outcomes. Alternative interventions for weight management, such as, pharmacotherapy and surgical procedures, should be considered an adjunct to lifestyle intervention, just as it is for managing hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, not as a replacement.

Special Programs Just for Teens

NewYork-Presbyterian has dedicated bariatric surgery programs for adults and teens, with services tailored to the needs of each age group. Our adolescent programs are among only a handful of U.S. centers approved to offer weight loss surgery to these young patients. Specialists from pediatric gastroenterology, endocrinology, nutrition, psychiatry, surgery, and other fields work together to help adolescents achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Support through your surgical journey

Weight loss surgery is a major procedure and a life-changing decision, we are here to support you. Your experience with us begins with an initial visit, where we assess your health, preferences, and needs and discuss your options.

  • You’ll attend a support group, which meets every other week, where you can receive educational information and hear from other patients who have had or are considering weight loss surgery—so you know what to expect. Your family members and friends are also welcome to attend. You can find out when the next support group is by calling 929-470-9900.
  • Some patients follow a medically supervised six-month diet to optimize their health before the operation.
  • You will see your doctor periodically before your procedure, with some visits able to be done by video chat using TeleHealth.
  • After your weight loss surgery, you will receive follow-up care for life, initially coming to see us each month, every few months, and eventually just once a year to see how you are doing. Our team is here to support you every step of the way.
