Allen Hospital

NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital is a 199 bed, full-service community hospital. We serve northern Manhattan, Riverdale and other communities in the Bronx, and provide services in Spanish to our Spanish-speaking patients and their families. All Allen Hospital physicians are part of NewYork Presbyterian Hospital and members of the faculty of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Among its specialties, NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital offers patients the most advanced care in geriatric medicine and heart failure; progressive educational programs in diabetes management; stress management; maternal and fetal health; and minimally invasive surgery — all in a warm, family-friendly environment. In our Daniel and Jane Och Spine Hospital, we provide innovative care for spinal conditions, from the most common disorders to the rarest and most difficult-to-treat deformities.

Volunteer Opportunities

Golden Spoons

Poor appetite and difficulties with eating are problems shared by some hospital patients. In addition, packaged foods are sometimes difficult to open and some patients need assistance. The purpose of the program is to provide patients with assistance during meal times so that they may meet their optimal nutritional goal. Through this feeding assistance program we hope to maintain the patient's nutritional status throughout their stay at the hospital.

Available daily from 7:30 AM – 10:00 AM; 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM; 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM

Emergency Department (ED)

The volunteer role in the Emergency Department is to enhance the personal dimension of genuine concern and compassion to patients and their families. The volunteer reassures patients and their families that someone is concerned about their emotional and social needs. This has a significant impact on the individual's perception of the ED and hospital experience. The volunteer, through communication, companionship and the use of problem solving techniques, can change what might otherwise be perceived as an insensitive, impersonal environment, to one of compassion and genuine concern.

Available daily, all hours (including overnights)

Patient Care Units

Unit volunteers add an additional dimension of care and compassion to patients and their families. Responsibilities include providing assistance to patients, family members, and visitors and also helping the nursing and unit staff to put patients first. This includes visiting and talking with patients offering emotional support, satisfying nonclinical needs and assisting visitors on the unit. Areas include: Geriatrics, Daniel and Jane Och Spine Hospital, ICU/Stepdown, Ambulatory Surgery and Medical/Surgical.

Available daily from 7:30 AM – 11:00  PM

The NYP Guide Program

The NYP Guide Program is a program designed to reduce confusion that individuals may have when navigating in the hospital. Volunteers help by navigating and at times walking with patients or visitors to the area of the hospital that they wish to visit. If you want to put a smile on someone's face, then this is the program for you! Training provided. Position does require that volunteer be able to stand for a period of time greeting patients and guests.

Available daily 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM.

Volunteers will provide much needed general office assistance at the direction of departmental staff. Duties may include answering telephones, filing, data entry or light typing, labeling, running errands, etc. Pleasant personality and accuracy are important.
