Bariatric/Weight Loss Surgery

MBSAQIP Accredited Center Quality Program

You want to feel better. Look better. Have more energy. Keep up with your kids or grandkids. You feel like you’ve tried every diet, but can’t seem to lose the extra pounds. And now your health is at risk, too. It’s time to do something different. It’s time to schedule an appointment with the NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital weight loss (bariatric) surgery professionals.

Our weight management specialists will carefully assess your health, work with you to understand your personal goals and preferences, and match you with the weight loss procedure that is best for you. Weight loss surgery can improve your quality of life, and even save it. Through one-on-one guidance and personalized attention, our team is dedicated to helping you accomplish your health and weight loss goals—so you can enjoy the kind of life you want.

A Center of Excellence in Weight Loss Surgery

For meeting the highest standards for patient safety and quality of care, NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital’s bariatric surgery program has been accredited as a Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program® (MBSAQIP)—a joint program of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. MBSAQIP standards ensure that patients undergoing bariatric surgery receive care through a multidisciplinary program, not just a surgical procedure, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success. Our accredited center offers care before and after surgery that is designed specifically for severely obese individuals.

A Collaborative Team to Help You Get Healthier

Your team includes surgeons, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists (hormone specialists), registered dietitians, nurses, psychologists, and others with the compassion and experience to provide the care you need to get healthy and to support your weight loss goals. If you need to see another specialist, NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley has those doctors on staff, too. For example, many people who are obese have sleep difficulties, such as sleep apnea. We can refer you to our Center for Sleep Medicine for a full assessment, such as a sleep study. You can receive all the care you need through one medical center, such as:

  • Heart care (cardiology)
  • Respiratory care (pulmonology)
  • Support to quit smoking. Our surgeons do not perform bariatric surgery in current smokers. If you smoke, we can connect you with the resources you need to quit.

Minimally Invasive Weight Loss Surgery

We offer a range of surgical weight loss procedures, performing them using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques through small incisions that result in less discomfort after surgery and a speedier recovery. These approaches are highly effective for weight loss and have also been found to cure type 2 diabetes, lower high blood pressure, reduce high cholesterol, and improve quality of life. You may be eligible to have one or a combination of these operations:

  • Sleeve gastrectomy
  • Gastric bypass surgery (“Roux-en-Y”)
  • Laparoscopic gastric banding (“lap band”)
  • Revisional surgery (when a first surgery did not achieve the desired results)

All the Support You Need

Weight loss surgery is a major procedure and a life-changing decision. We offer all the care you need before and after surgery to enhance your chance of success.

  • Patient education sessions. You’ll attend a patient education session where you can receive educational information and hear from other patients who have had or are considering weight loss surgery — so you know what to expect. Your family members and friends are also welcome to attend. You can find out when the next session is by calling 914-734-3966.
  • Bariatric support group. We offer a bariatric support group for all weight loss surgery patients. The meeting is held on the second Wednesday of every month in the ground floor conference room at the hospital at 6 p.m. For more information, call 914-734-3966.
  • Medical weight loss before surgery. Some patients follow a medically supervised diet before the operation to lose weight and optimize their health. We'll connect you with the hospital's medical weight loss team if this is part of your care.
  • Follow-up care for life. After your weight loss surgery, you will receive ongoing care. We collaborate with your primary care physician to ensure continuity of care. Our team is here to support you every step of the way.
  • Emotional health support. Weight loss surgery is a major lifestyle change and can affect your emotional health, too. We offer mental health support, with a psychologist evaluating you before and after surgery and providing you with the mental health support you need.
  • Learn how to eat better. You'll continue to see a registered dietitian to help you stay on track. NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital’s renowned Chef Peter X. Kelly Teaching Kitchen is a significant resource for the Hudson Valley community and offers special cooking demonstrations for patients who have weight loss surgery and their families. You'll need to eat differently after weight loss surgery, and our cooking team can show you how.
