When Stephanie was midway through her pregnancy with Layla she and her husband received news every parent fears - their baby had a heart defect. With those chilling words, they knew this life-threatening condition would require urgent care at a world-class Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) immediately after birth. Their baby would be born fighting for her life. Thankfully, they knew where to turn. They arrived at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital eager to find hope. Our expert team of doctors and nurses immediately began to care for Layla. Layla’s spent her first few weeks in the NICU until she was strong enough for surgery. At only seven weeks old, Layla underwent delicate open-heart surgery to save her life.
“It’s the most difficult thing a parent could ever deal with, but we felt supported so we could focus on what was really important - our baby and her challenges,” says Stephanie. “Everyone was kind and reassuring, and the nurses were incredible.”
Today, Layla is 14 months old and almost walking. “Seeing her cruising around is a joy. People have no idea she had heart surgery. As difficult as it was, we’re so grateful. I can’t imagine better care anywhere else.”
