Nasal Cavity & Paranasal Sinus Cancer

Nasal cavity and paranasal sinus cancers are rare. But when they do occur, you need a team of head and neck cancer specialists combining their expertise and skills to give you the best chance of a good outcome. At NewYork-Presbyterian, we have all the specialists you need to treat you with the most effective therapies available — with the goal of curing your cancer and maintaining your appearance and quality of life.

A Team of Experts

Your team includes head and neck cancer surgeons rhinologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They discuss your case together and tailor a regimen of therapy that meets your needs. They also collaborate with other NewYork-Presbyterian physicians, such as neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists, and plastic surgeons, to ensure you receive the best care available. Nutritionists, speech therapists, and dental oncologists are also part of your team, ensuring that you remain healthy and strong during and after therapy.

Surgery for Nasal and Paranasal Sinus Cancers

Not all patients with nasal and paranasal sinus cancers have surgery. If you need surgery, our specialists use minimally invasive approaches whenever possible to remove your tumor. Depending on the size and location of your tumor, they may also need to remove nearby bone. If they need to take out a large amount of tissue or bone around the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses, our plastic surgeons may participate in the operation to repair or rebuild the area. Together your surgeons do all they can to restore your form and function.

Chemotherapy, Radiation Therapy, and Immunotherapy

You may receive chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy, either in place of or in addition to surgery.

  • Customized radiation therapy. You can receive finely targeted radiation therapy in our state-of-the-art radiation treatment centers. Novel approaches enable treatment to be targeted to your tumor, sparing as much nearby healthy as possible and reducing your risk of side effects.
  • Support during chemotherapy. We administer chemotherapy in our modern infusion suites. Our experienced oncology nurses monitor your response to therapy during the infusion to ensure you are comfortable and support you during your treatment.
  • Harnessing your immune system. Some people with advanced nasal cancer may benefit from immunotherapy, which boosts the power of the immune system to detect and destroy cancer cells. We give the latest immunotherapies in our infusion suites.

Supporting Your Recovery

Treatment for nasal and paranasal sinus cancers may impair your breathing and the ability to speak the way you used to. Our speech therapists work with you during and after your treatment to help you communicate effectively. Nutritionists are also part of your team and can assist you in making dietary choices that support good health.

Clinical Trials for Nasal and Paranasal Sinus Cancers

NewYork-Presbyterian participates in clinical studies evaluating innovative treatments for cancers of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Your doctor will let you know if you may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial.
