Our Approach to Care

Caring for All of You

We understand that a cancer diagnosis can be challenging for you and your loved ones. That’s why we offer a full range of psychosocial, nutritional, and other support services for women with gynecologic cancers. Your team includes doctors who are board-certified in palliative care as well, ensuring that your quality of life is the best it can be from the moment of diagnosis and throughout your treatment.

A Multidisciplinary Team Approach to Care

Your team is very accessible and includes gynecologic oncologists who oversee your care, working with pathologists, radiologists, genetic counselors, nutritionists, oncology nurses and nurse practitioners, psychosocial support specialists, and other experts with a longstanding commitment to women’s health. We get to know you and your family, your life events, and any personal or cultural preferences, and we take these into account when planning and providing your care.

A Commitment to Fertility Preservation

If you wish to become pregnant after your treatment is over, we have expertise in fertility-sparing surgery whenever feasible that can preserve the ability to have children without compromising cancer outcomes. We can collaborate with infertility specialists to review your fertility preservation options. Embryo and egg freezing are sometimes available before you begin your cancer treatment and in vitro fertilization afterward.

Genetic Counseling

If you have an increased risk of ovarian cancer because of a family history of the disease, you can consult with a genetic counselor and undergo genetic testing (for example, screening for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations or Lynch syndrome). If you have such a mutation, we’ll offer you several options to greatly decrease your risk of developing ovarian and fallopian tube cancer.

Advanced Treatment Approaches

The Latest Medical Treatments

We provide the newest anticancer drugs, drug combinations, intraperitoneal chemotherapy (delivered directly into the abdomen), emerging biological and genetically guided therapies, and immunotherapies designed to slow, stop, or shrink your cancer. While many hospitals refer patients who need chemotherapy for gynecologic cancer to other facilities, our team gives your chemotherapy in our hospital. Studies have shown that patients do better when their gynecologic oncologist is involved in all aspects of their care.

Precision Medicine

We may be able to offer you a treatment that targets the abnormal molecules driving the growth of your cancer. Precision medicine—tailoring treatment to the biology of your tumor—is a strength of NewYork-Presbyterian and enables us to offer targeted therapies for some gynecologic cancers, such as PARP inhibitors for some women with advanced ovarian cancer.

Pinpoint Radiation Therapy

If your cancer can be treated with radiation therapy, we offer external beam radiation therapy, in which radiation beams are finely targeted to your tumor, sparing as much nearby healthy tissue as possible. You can receive these treatments in our state-of-the-art radiation therapy center. Some women are candidates for brachytherapy (placing radiation-containing sources directly in or near tumors to kill cancer cells), which we also offer.

Advanced Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

At NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist, our goal is to offer the best treatment through the least invasive method. Should you need gynecologic surgery, our gynecologic surgeons have unmatched expertise in minimally invasive approaches, including hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, and robotic surgery, to treat the most complex and challenging gynecologic conditions. These approaches results in smaller incisions, less postoperative discomfort, and a quicker return to your normal activities.

Clinical Trials for Gynecologic Cancers

Our hospital is a site for the NRG Oncology Group, which brings together the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, and the Gynecologic Oncology Group — each recognized internationally as a leader in cancer research. Through our relationship with Weill Cornell Medicine, we are a member of the academically prestigious Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology. You may be able to participate in a clinical trial of a promising new gynecologic cancer therapy.
