The Summer Youth Experience (SYE) aims to introduce young adults to the depths and breadths of health professions while providing real-world opportunities in a world class academic medical center. Interns will gain an up-close experience at the intersection of youth development, program implementation and evaluation, and hospital administration.

Through this internship, interns will be able to:

  • Develop skills and greater understanding of program development, implementation, and evaluation, including data collection and organization.
  • Hone professional and educational communication skills with large groups and with adolescent populations.
  • Interact with multidisciplinary teams, including clinical and community collaborators and youth, to support participant experience.

Interns will accomplish by doing the following:

  • Facilitate communication between SYE participants and Site Supervisors on different medical campuses. Generate and present staff orientation materials and perform participant outreach leading up to SYE’s launch in July.
  • Create, edit, and approve schedules for SYE participants, including communicating with SYE participants via email and phone to resolve timecard and schedule issues. During SYE (July & August), act as point person for questions and concerns for SYE participants and site supervisors.
  • Create and implement materials to evaluate the program’s success.

As part of their participation, interns will be required to complete the following deliverables:

  • Create educational materials and professional development workshops geared toward young adults interested in health professions.
  • Design and implement program evaluation tools to assess program effectiveness regarding participant and site supervisor experiences. Additional deliverables may be produced depending on the intern's interests and objectives.

NewYork-Presbyterian’s youth development portfolio is a dynamic continuum of programs designed to empower young people through education, mentorship, and career readiness. The Lang Youth Medical Program provides a rigorous six-year pathway for middle and high school students to explore healthcare careers, gain hands-on experience, and build academic excellence. Complementing this, the Uptown Hub serves as a vibrant community space offering resources, workshops, and supportive services that foster personal growth, behavioral health services, and workforce development for local youth. Meanwhile, the Summer Youth Experience introduces participants to professional environments, equipping them with practical skills and exposure to diverse career opportunities. Together, these initiatives reflect NYP’s commitment to nurturing future leaders, advancing health equity, and strengthening the social fabric of the communities it serves.
