COVID-19 Pediatric Safety

Our pediatric practices wanted to share the latest information about COVID-19 safety, vaccines, boosters, and testing to help protect you and your loved ones during the ongoing pandemic.

The best way to protect your child against COVID-19 is to get them vaccinated and boosted, if they are eligible, have them wear a mask when inside, and get them tested if they have been exposed or show signs of having COVID-19. Vaccines are free, safe, and easily accessible throughout the New York City area.

People who are 5 years or older can get the COVID-19 vaccine. It is the best way for your children to be able to go to school and not get sick, and it is free for everyone! Protection against COVID-19 is important for your health and the health of your family and your community.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children 12 and up should get a booster 5 months after their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. This will offer the best protection against hospitalization and severe disease from COVID-19.

The vaccines are safe and effective.

After getting the vaccine, the most common side effects are pain in the arm, headache or feeling tired. Some might also get a fever and experience body pain. Most children experience few if any of these symptoms.

There are many ways your child can get the vaccine:

  • All eligible children will be offered their COVID-19 vaccines when they come for their scheduled visits in the practice.
  • You can call the practice or send a message to your doctor through MYCHART/CONNECT. Ask for a “vaccine ONLY” appointment with a nurse. You will get an appointment at one of our locations during the week or Saturdays at the NewYork-Presbyterian Audubon Primary Care Practice.
  • If your mobile number is in your MYCHART/CONNECT account, you may also receive a text message with a link allowing you to schedule a vaccine visit for the COVID-19 vaccine on a Saturday at the Audubon Practice.
  • You can go with your child to a local pharmacy that offers the COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 and up. We will be able to see the vaccine records in your child’s medical record.
  • You can also find other sites at: COVID19vaccine.health.ny.gov, www.nyc.gov/vaccinefinder, www.nycvaccinelist.com, vax4nyc.nyc.gov/patient/s/ or Bronx residents may schedule at somosvaccination.mdland.com/p/covid/.

You can call the Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC) and NewYork-Presbyterian COVID-19 Vaccine Scheduling Hotline at 646-838-0319. Someone who speaks English and Spanish will make the appointment for you and your child.

You can also set up an appointment through Connect, NewYork-Presbyterian’s online health care management system, if you have an account. Click here to log in or set up an account.

Yes. Everyone who is 2 years of age and older should wear a mask. Wearing masks will prevent COVID-19 from spreading at schools and daycares.

At this time, we recommend the use of two masks – a surgical mask with a cloth mask over it. Other options for older children include K95 or N95 masks.

If your child is a student and exhibits any COVID-19-like symptoms or was exposed at school, you can use a home rapid test given by their school.

You can also go to NYC’s Department of Health free testing sites across the city – please check https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/covid/covid-19-testing.page to find the nearest testing location.

Finally, many urgent care centers provide testing across NYC.

Our practices are offering very limited testing at this time and it is primarily reserved for patients who are under the age of 2 or with special medical needs because of limited staffing. These appointments are provided only after video visits and at the direction of the medical provider.

The doctors and the health care teams at Columbia and NewYork-Presbyterian want you to know that we are here for you. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk to your doctor.
