NYP My Block is a built environment program that partners with community-based organizations to increase access to healthy lifestyles through public space activations (play streets, sports camps, community events, etc.) or built environment improvements (public art, community gardens, sidewalk clean-ups, etc.). Each project leverages existing community resources to increase opportunities for physical activity and social connection and is tailored to a neighborhood's unique strengths and needs, guided by the knowledge and experiences of local organizations.

Through this internship, interns will be able to:

  • Gain experience in community-facing programming with a focus on chronic disease prevention, social connection, and neighborhood safety.
  • Gain experience in using validated evaluation tools to study the impact of built environment projects.
  • Gain experience with cross-sector collaboration with community and city agency partners.

Interns will accomplish by doing the following:

  • Support My Block and CHALK community programming, including but not limited to physical activity, arts, or cooking demonstrations (often outdoors in hot or cold conditions).
  • Support My Block evaluation efforts, including but not limited to observational studies, surveying, data entry, and data analysis.
  • Participate in program planning, strategy, and team building meetings with the CHALK team.
  • Support additional CHALK programs (Youth Market, Food FARMacy, etc.) as needed.
  • Help strengthen community representation in improvement and implementation of CHALK’s programs.
  • As part of their participation, interns will be required to complete the following deliverables:
    • Intern will submit a final evaluation report and digital data sheets

Food FARMacy launched in 2019 in collaboration with West Side Campaign Against Hunger (WSCAH) to address food insecurity among low-income populations. Between 2020 and 2022, the program expanded significantly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting distributions at more than 10 community-based sites across New York City and Westchester County and distributing over 3 million pounds of healthy groceries to families in need. In 2023, Food FARMacy transitioned to a home delivery model, focusing on NewYork-Presbyterian patients who screen positive for food insecurity. Eligible households receive 40 pounds of nutritious groceries every two weeks for a six-month period. Additionally, participants are then connected to public benefits, including SNAP and WIC.

Youth Market complements our emergency food response by investing in future leaders. Young people recruited from neighborhoods heavily affected by food insecurity participate in a paid summer internship, receiving training and mentorship in the public health field. Interns then lead nutrition workshops and provide free, nutritious groceries to their peers and neighbors.
