Interns would support the Manhattan Cancer Services Program (MCSP) and related cancer screening and patient navigation initiatives. MCSP connects eligible individuals to no-cost breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening and diagnostic services and provides navigation and case management through diagnosis and access to treatment. MCSP is funded by the NYS Department of Health and collaborates with healthcare providers and community-based organizations to improve screening access and reduce disparities.
Through this internship, interns will learn:
- How a grant-funded public health program operates and is evaluated within a large healthcare system.
- How patient navigation and case management help address disparities and support screening, diagnostic follow-up, and treatment.
- How program data and community feedback inform outreach and quality improvement.
- Effective community engagement, health education, and partnership development strategies.
- The importance of culturally responsive, community-centered approaches to healthcare access.
Interns will accomplish the above through:
- Support the planning, implementation, and evaluation of community outreach and cancer education activities.
- Develop culturally and linguistically responsive health education and resource materials.
- Assist with patient navigation, care coordination, and referral resources under staff supervision.
- Analyze outreach, referral, screening, and patient-satisfaction data to identify trends and service gaps.
- Contribute to program tracking, quality improvement, grant reporting, and recommendations.
- Participate in meetings with healthcare providers, community partners, and public health stakeholders.
As part of their participation, interns will be required to complete the following deliverables:
- A defined project aligned with MCSP priorities, such as a needs assessment, data analysis, outreach evaluation, quality-improvement initiative, or health education resource.
- Present findings and recommendations through a brief written report and final presentation.
