Center for Patient Safety Research Team

Center for Patient Safety Research

The Center for Patient Safety Research works to improve patient safety by developing solutions that are effective, replicable and scalable. Led by Dr. Jason Adelman, the Center is a collaboration among NewYork-Presbyterian, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and Weill Cornell Medical Center. With funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Center conducts innovative patient safety research and its application to a wide range of healthcare settings.

Center for Patient Safety Research

Patient Safety Research Fellowship

Funded by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Patient Safety Research Fellowship trains Medicine and Pediatric clinician-researchers in interdisciplinary, systematic methods for improving quality, safety, and effectiveness of care. Over the course of 2 years, this unique fellowship allows for protected time to conduct research, provides funding for a master’s degree at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, and supports the development of a grant proposal with guidance from a research mentor.

Infection Prevention and Control

Our team develops and implement evidence-based practices to prevent harm caused by infections in patients and healthcare personnel in the healthcare setting. Core components of the Infection Prevention and Control program include prevention of healthcare-associated infections in patients, visitors, and healthcare personnel, managing emerging infections and other communicable diseases, minimizing occupational exposures and educating staff, patients and visitors about infection prevention and control.

Analytics

Analytics

Analytics collects, manages, interprets, and shares data to help inform and continuously improve the care and safety of our patients. The Analytics team leverages data to measure our successes, identify areas for improvement, and benchmark against peer institutions.

Regulatory Accreditation

Regulatory Accreditation

We oversee efforts to maintain the highest standards of quality and safety, in keeping with guidelines set forth by agencies that regulate and accredit hospitals. Our team works closely with these agencies to keep abreast of newly-established protocols to improve health outcomes and helps implement them at our Hospitals.

Improvement Science

Improvement Science

Our team of Clinical Systems Engineers (CSEs) employ lean methodology and use A3 thinking to provide a systematic approach to improving performance gaps. CSEs are available to coach teams by offering ideas, tools, and facilitation to assess and analyze current processes, identify best practices, and assist with implementing improvements to patient care processes. The goal of the Improvement Science team is to foster a culture of continuous improvement across NYP by creating an army of problem solvers through teaching and coaching of lean principles.
