Reconstructive Surgery services are available for patients of all ages.
A cooperative effort with the department of Pediatrics and the Division of Pediatric Surgery allows plastic surgeons to deliver full restorative care to pediatric patients with congenital and post-traumatic problems. A cleft lip and palate service is comprised of plastic surgeons working together with pediatricians, dentists, orthodontists, otolaryngologists, and speech therapists. The division also has members with large experience in the reconstruction of hand anomalies and less common congenital problems of the breast and trunk.
Reconstructive procedures including microvascular free tissue transfer are performed in large numbers to provide orthopaedic coverage and for functional and aesthetic restoration following cancer surgery. The hospital's Cancer Center is home to a large, multidisciplinary clinical group which provides comprehensive oncologic and restorative treatments for the population of greater New York. Members of the Division of Plastic Surgery contribute in important ways to this team effort, having large experience in the reconstruction of head and neck, breast, chest, abdominal wall and extremity defects. Our experience in microvascular reconstructive techniques is among the largest in the northeastern United States.
The Department of Surgery has recently committed itself to the development of a cosmetic surgery program which is second to none. Through the provision of a "cosmetic package" for elective aesthetic surgery patients, the hospital has made an important contribution to the Department's efforts to provide affordable cosmetic services. Staff surgeons, including several attracted from Manhattan and Long Island, are able to offer patients comfortable private rooms and the care of specially trained nurses. The most modern modalities are now practiced in the institution, including endoscopic aesthetic surgery, laser skin resurfacing, complex open rhinoplasty and superficial liposculpture. Also important is the ability of the radiology department to provide state-of-the-art imaging for women undergoing plastic surgery of the breast.
