Message from the Director
NewYork-Presbyterian Queens is excited to be recruiting for next year's class of oral and maxillofacial pathology residents. We are looking for one to three highly motivated individuals who are interested in entering the first and longest-running hospital-based oral and maxillofacial pathology program in the country. The oral pathology biopsy service is one of the busiest in the nation and the faculty has years of experience in education, research, and administration.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology program at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens is a fully accredited ADA postgraduate residency program. Founded in 1972 and based at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens since 1981, it is designed to train post-graduate students in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology in a manner similar to that of the medical general pathology resident. Residents are trained to be strong surgical oral pathologists, lecturers, and clinicians in clinical oral pathology and oral medicine and learn basic research skills. The residency is three years in length.
In addition to the educational objectives of this program, the resident is taught to feel comfortable in the hospital environment and become competent and confident in his/her interactions with medical colleagues. This unique hospital-oriented perspective also exposes the resident to different career possibilities in oral pathology other than those encouraged by post-graduate oral pathology programs based in dental schools. It encourages the resident to seek a career in hospital oral pathology as well as the practice of clinical oral pathology, thus opening new fields of employment for trainees in the specialty. The source of the pathologic educational material is the Oral Pathology Laboratory, Inc., which is based in NewYork-Presbyterian Queens and is the largest oral biopsy service in the United States, accessing over 13,000 cases a year. What follows is a brief description of the nature of our training program.
Our 36-month hospital-based oral pathology residency program is accredited by the American Dental Association Council on Dental Education and qualifies the resident for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology examination. The program is designed to prepare the trainee:
- To understand and correlate the gross and microscopic characteristics of biopsy specimens and in so doing arrive at a diagnosis;
- To learn to write gross and microscopic descriptions;
- To understand and correlate the gross and microscopic characteristics of head and neck resection specimens;
- To direct an oral pathology biopsy service;
- To teach oral pathology to undergraduate dental students, dental residents, and oral and maxillofacial surgery residents;
The resident is assigned lectures and participates in laboratory teaching during:
- The post-graduate oral pathology course at our institution given to the dental and pathology residents and dental residents from other local hospitals;
- The training of oral surgery residents who rotate through oral pathology.
- The education of dental students.
To teach oral pathology and general pathology residents;
- To present case reports at hospital conferences and tumor boards;
- To perform clinicopathologic correlative research;
- To prepare papers for publication on clinicopathologic topics;
- To diagnose and treat oral mucosal diseases including vesiculobullous diseases, allergic reactions, infectious disease, drug reactions, and premalignant and malignant lesions;
- To learn how to evaluate and treat the oral manifestations of systemic diseases.
Each resident will spend 6 months at New York University/Bellevue Medical Center, in a general pathology rotation where they will perform in the same capacity as their medical colleagues. They will spend an additional month in dermatopathology at NYPH-Cornell Campus.
Conclusion
We believe the residency in oral pathology at the NewYork-Presbyterian Queens offers the highest level of education available in the field. The atmosphere is friendly, diverse, and one that fosters a relaxed learning atmosphere. We are looking for a new group of outstanding, highly motivated dentists for the upcoming year. We look forward to reviewing applications and meeting qualified applicants in interviews. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any of our current residents and attendings with any questions.
Best regards,
Paul D. Freedman, D.D.S., Director
