Overview

From 2016 to 2019, our heart surgeons performed 2,907 pediatric and adult congenital heart surgeries and our interventional cardiologists performed 5,246 pediatric and adult catheter procedures.

Our heart surgeons and interventionalists take on the most complex cases with operative survival rates above national benchmarks.

NewYork-Presbyterian’s Congenital Heart Center is among the largest and most preeminent in the nation. Considered a top 5 high-volume center by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), our heart surgeons performed 2,907 pediatric and adult congenital heart surgeries and our interventional cardiologists performed 5,246 pediatric and adult catheter procedures from 2016 to 2019. With leading programs in pediatric cardiology, cardiac surgery, and pediatric transplant, we have extensive experience with complex cases and have operative survival rates above national benchmarks.

Under the direction of cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Emile A. Bacha, who has been at the forefront of developing novel techniques to perform hybrid surgical-interventional procedures for complex congenital heart defects (CHDs) including hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and pediatric cardiologist Dr. Ralf J. Holzer, a renowned expert in minimally invasive transcatheter procedures to treat children with congenital heart disease, NewYork-Presbyterian’s Congenital Heart Center has built a national reputation for achieving the best possible outcomes for every patient. At the writing of this report, we are also pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Christopher J. Petit, as the Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center on March 1, 2021. Dr. Petit is an internationally recognized expert in minimally invasive techniques to replace diseased heart valves, close cardiac defects, and implant stents.

Families from around the world come to NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital, where they find the most advanced diagnostic and treatment methods for pediatric and adult patients with CHDs.

This includes fetal diagnostic methods and therapies, neonatal and pediatric cardiac intensive care, mechanical cardiopulmonary support, pulmonary hypertension management, electrophysiology studies, noninvasive imaging, pediatric cardiac anesthesia. Additionally, we provide comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for teens who are transitioning to adult congenital heart disease care.
