New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Breastfeeding Support Group for new mothers. This group, which is also open to mothers who did not deliver their babies at NYM, meets weekly on Tuesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Breastfeeding Support Group focuses on providing encouragement and information for mothers and their newborns, from birth to three months old. A certified lactation consultant leads the group. The meetings take place in the Hospital's Wesley House, Rooms 3K-C, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. The New York Methodist Hospital Cancer Support Group will meet on Thursday, September 6, 2012 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both a physician and a chaplain lead the group. Join NYM's physicians as they lecture about various health topics affecting seniors as part of our Senior Health Seminar Series. This month's presentation will feature Jeremy Weingarten, M.D., sleep disorders specialist at New York Methodist Hospital. The lecture title is "No Sleep Till Brooklyn!" This free seminar will take place on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Brooklyn College Student Center located at East 27th Street and Campus Road. Hepatitis C (HVC) is an infection caused by a virus that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over four million Americans are infected with HVC. New York Methodist Hospital hosts a Hepatitis C Support Group for people living with HVC and their loved ones. The group is directed by a physician specializing in liver disorders. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Hospital's Executive Dining Room, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Sickle cell disease is an inherited disease of the blood that interferes with the body's ability to manufacture normal hemoglobin (part of the red blood cell that carries oxygen). In recognition of National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, New York Methodist Hospital will host a free educational information session on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Hospital's Carrington Pavilion Atrium located on the first floor, 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Obesity is an epidemic that impacts over nine million Americans. More and more people who are affected by obesity are seeking information about surgical weight reduction. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Surgical Weight Reduction Information Seminar and Support Group. This month the group will meet on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Thursday, September 27, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the first 30 minutes of the seminar, a surgeon will conduct an information session for individuals who are interested in learning about the surgery. A 90-minute support group meeting, open to pre- and post-operative patients will follow the information session.
