For a limited time, New York Methodist Hospital is offering free lung cancer screenings. A screening at NYM begins with a thorough evaluation by a program physician, followed by a low-dose, computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest, which provides detailed images of the patient's lungs. Recent studies have shown that screening with low-dose spiral CT scans, compared to chest X-ray, reduces lung cancer deaths among older heavy smokers by 20 percent. To qualify for a free lung cancer screening, you must be a current or former smoker (having quit within the past 15 years) between the ages of 55 to 74, with a smoking history of at least 30 pack-years, and have no prior history of lung cancer.
