Aug 30, 2004
New York, NY
NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System has announced that, together with OR International, a New York-based developer of specialty surgical hospitals, it will help develop a specialty surgical hospital in Somerset, England.
Under the agreement, NewYork-Presbyterian will furnish the Shepton Mallet Treatment Centre with consultative and advisory services relative to the design, scope, and nature of clinical programming, the development of quality assurance procedures and their ongoing monitoring, and the training of key physician and nursing personnel some of which will take place at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York. OR International was recently awarded a contract by the U.K. Department of Health and National Health Service to oversee the project.
Shepton Mallet Treatment Centre is scheduled to open in July of 2005, and will have four operating theaters, 34 beds and a new MRI scanner. An estimated 56,242 new procedures will be carried out at the facility over the life of the five-year contract. Approximately 40 percent of the procedures will be in orthopedics, 21 percent will be in ophthalmology and the remainder will be in general surgery.
We are pleased to be able to join forces with OR International to help develop this service, which, in partnership with the National Health Service, will give patients faster access to the highest quality care, said Dr. Arthur A. Klein, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System.
The development of the Shepton Mallet Treatment Centre is part of a broader commitment made by the British government last year to create 26 high-quality, fast-track treatment centers in the U.K. using leading international health-care providers. These centers are part of the National Health Service's Independent Sector Treatment Centre Program, and will reduce the waiting time for surgery, which for some procedures can be as long as 12 months, improve choice and outcomes for patients and will treat an estimated 250,000 patients per year.
