NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Earns LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader Designation in Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Healthcare Equality Index

Apr 23, 2018

Flushing, New York

NewYork-Presbyterian Queens has announced its "LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader" designation from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC), the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization. The designation was reported in the 11th edition of the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). A record 626 healthcare facilities actively participated in the HEI 2018 survey, with HRC Foundation proactively researching key policies at more than 900 additional non-participating hospitals. Of those included in the HEI, 418 earned a “LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader” designation.

The 11th edition of the HEI implements criteria that raises the bar on what it takes to earn HRC’s "LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader" designation.  HEI participants are given scores in four criteria that represent how many policies and best practices from each section they have implemented: foundational elements of LGBTQ patient-centered care, LGBTQ Patient Services and Support, Employee Benefits and Policies, and LGBTQ Patient and Community Engagement. NewYork-Presbyterian Queens received the maximum score in each section for a total score of 100 points, earning the coveted status of 2018 “LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader.”

“Offering outstanding patient care – regardless of race, creed, socioeconomic status, gender identity or sexual orientation – is a hallmark of our hospital and the entire NewYork-Presbyterian enterprise. That is why it is a real honor to earn the LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader award,” said Jaclyn Mucaria, president of NewYork-Presbyterian Queens.

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation is the education arm of America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
