New York Methodist Hospital recently recruited Ivan Grunberger, M.D., F.A.C.S., to become the Hospital's new chief of urology. Dr. Grunberger treats diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract in men and women, and the reproductive system of men. Dr. Grunberger's current research-which covers erectile dysfunction in men, urinary stress incontinence in women, complicated lower urinary tract infections, and treatments for both prostate and kidney cancer-reflects the breadth of his medical expertise.

"I look forward to continuing my research at NYM, he said. "Research developments can lead to enhanced medical care for our patients. I'm also excited by the prospect of collaborating on projects with other departments and divisions at NYM, such as Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology and Obstetrics and Gynecology."

One example of treatment for prostate cancer covered by Dr. Grunberger's research is cryotherapy, a minimally invasive procedure that entails destroying cancerous tissue by freezing cells in the prostate gland. "Due to its minimally invasive nature, cryotherapy can be a good option for patients who are not able to undergo more invasive procedures, said Dr. Grunberger. "It can also be ideal for patients who failed prior treatments with radiation."

Before coming to NYM, Dr. Grunberger was vice chairman of urology at Long Island College Hospital. He is chairman of the Urology Section of the New York Academy of Medicine, and is certified by the American Board of Urology and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is also clinical associate professor of urology at SUNY-Downstate College of Medicine.

Dr. Grunberger expects that the Division of Urology will expand, and also aims to increase community awareness of various urological diseases. "Ivan Grunberger has a fine reputation, great energy, and various plans to enhance the urology service at New York Methodist Hospital, said Errol Hankin, senior vice president of NYM. "His appointment places the Hospital at the forefront in the provision of urological medical services."

Anthony Tortolani, M.D., chairman of the surgery at NYM, added, "The Hospital is delighted to welcome Dr. Grunberger as the new chief of urology. The recent growth in this division enables NYM to provide the highest level of care to patients who are diagnosed with urologic diseases or conditions."
