New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Breastfeeding Support Group for new mothers. This group, which is also open to mothers who did not deliver their babies at NYM, meets weekly on Tuesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Breastfeeding Support Group focuses on providing encouragement and information for mothers and their newborns, from birth to three months old. A certified lactation consultant leads the group. The meetings take place in the Hospital's Wesley House, Rooms 3K-C, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Bereavement Support Group. This month the Bereavement Support Group will meet on Thursday, May 3, 2012 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. in the Buckley 8 Conference Room, 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. For people who have lost premature or newborn infants, NYM also offers a Perinatal Bereavement Support Group which will meet later that evening (May 3) from 8:00 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. A licensed clinical social worker facilitates the group. The New York Methodist Hospital Cancer Support Group will meet on Thursday, May 10, 2012 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both a physician and a chaplain lead the group. Join NYM's physicians as they lecture about various health topics affecting seniors as part of our Senior Health Seminar Series. This month's presentation will feature a neurologist and a physical therapist specializing in balance disorders at New York Methodist Hospital. The lecture title is "Stroke and Balance Disorders." This free seminar will take place on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Brooklyn College Student Center located at East 27th Street and Campus Road. Hepatitis C (HVC) is an infection caused by a virus that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over four million Americans are infected with HCV. New York Methodist Hospital hosts a Hepatitis C Support Group for people living with HVC and their loved ones. The group is directed by a physician specializing in liver disorders. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Hospital's Executive Dining Room, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Each year about 700,000 Americans suffer from a new or recurrent stroke. May is American Stroke Month and in observance, New York Methodist Hospital will sponsor Stroke Alert Day. This health fair will feature free screenings as well as stroke risk assessment and information about advance directives. There will be free educational information from the American Stroke Association and NYM's healthcare professionals will be available to answer questions. Stroke Alert Day will take place on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Hospital's Medical Office Pavilion Lobby, 263 Seventh Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Obesity is an epidemic that impacts over nine million Americans. More and more people who are affected by obesity are seeking information about surgical weight reduction. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Surgical Weight Reduction Information Seminar and Support Group. This month the group will meet on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Thursday, May 24, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the first 30 minutes of the seminar, a surgeon will conduct an information session for individuals who are interested in learning about the surgery. A 90-minute support group meeting, open to pre- and post-operative patients will follow the information session.
