Free Events and Support Groups Sponsored by New York Methodist Hospital

The New York Methodist Hospital Cancer Support Group will meet on Thursday, March 3, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both a physician and a chaplain lead the group. This time of year can be especially hard when you are missing a loved one. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Bereavement Support Group. This month the Bereavement Support Group will meet on Thursday, March 3, 2011 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. in the Buckley 8 Conference Room, 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. For people who have lost premature or newborn infants, NYM will also offer a Perinatal Bereavement Support Group which will meet later that evening from 8:00 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. on March 3. Millions of Americans suffer from hand disorders such as arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis in the wrist, and trigger finger. . On Monday, March 7, 2011 from 7:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., Salil Gupta, M.D. will offer a free lecture on "Common Hand Problems." The lecture will take place in New York Methodist Hospital's Medical Office Pavilion, located at 263 Seventh Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn, on the second floor in the MetroSportsMed area. Resolve to quit smoking for good this spring! New York Methodist Hospital's Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine is co-sponsoring a seven-week "Freedom From Smoking" workshop with the American Lung Association. The fee for the workshop is $75, which will cover the cost of the course materials. The seven-week "Freedom From Smoking" workshop series will kick off on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The classes will take place on the Hospital campus in Wesley House, Room 7B, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope Brooklyn. Over 18 million Americans suffer from diabetes, the disease which occurs when the body fails to produce enough insulin or when the produced insulin does not work as effectively as it should. This March, New York Methodist Hospital will sponsor Diabetes Alert Day. This free health fair will feature free glucose screenings, free blood pressure screenings, and certified diabetes educators who will be available to answer questions. Nutrition and pharmacy information will also be provided. In addition, the Friends of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus Foundation will offer free glaucoma screenings, because diabetes patients are at high risk for glaucoma.

More than 10 percent of American adults over the age of 65, and approximately 50 percent of those older than 85, have memory disorders. Although not uncommon, memory decline is not a part of normal aging. On Thursday, March 24, 2011, Linda Perez, NP, Administrative Director of Neurosciences at NYM, will offer the third in a series of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life lectures on "Senior Moments: Age-Related Memory Changes" from 7:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The lecture will take place in New York Methodist Hospital's East Pavilion Auditorium, Park Slope, Brooklyn. According to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, "as many as one million Americans live with Parkinson's disease, and approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with the disease each year. These numbers do not reflect the thousands of cases that go undetected." On Monday, March 28, 2011 from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Miran Salgado, M.D., chairman of neurosciences at New York Methodist Hospital, and Martin Zonenshayn, M.D., chief of neurosurgery at NYM will offer a free presentation on "Treatment Options for Parkinson's Disease. The lecture will take place in NYM's East Pavilion Auditorium located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Refreshments will be served. Obesity is an epidemic that impacts over nine million Americans. More and more people who are affected by obesity are seeking information about surgical weight reduction. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Surgical Weight Reduction Information Seminar and Support Group. This month the group will meet on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Thursday, March 24, 2011 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the first 30 minutes of the seminar, a surgeon will conduct an information session for individuals who are interested in learning about the surgery. A 90-minute support group meeting, open to pre- and post-operative patients will follow the information session.
