NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has been recognized for its efforts to promote sustainability with two honors from The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The hospital won the 2014 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year — Sustained Excellence Award for its long-term commitment to energy efficiency and the 2014 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year — Climate Communications Award for its outstanding efforts to raise awareness about climate change through its sustainability initiative, NYPgreen. These accomplishments were recognized today in Washington, D.C. NewYork-Presbyterian is the only hospital in the country to earn a Partner of the Year award this year, as well as the only hospital to win the award nine times.

The 2014 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year — Sustained Excellence Award was awarded to the hospital for the ninth year for reducing greenhouse gas emissions through superior energy efficiency. This award is given to a select group of organizations that have exhibited outstanding leadership year after year in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by setting and achieving aggressive goals and employing innovative energy efficiency approaches. Award winners are selected from the 16,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program. In 2013, NewYork-Presbyterian reduced its site energy use intensity by six percent, eclipsing its goal of a two percent reduction. The hospital also has ambitious long-term sustainability goals, pledging to reduce its energy intensity by 20 percent by 2020 and its greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2018 from a 2005 baseline.

NewYork-Presbyterian was also recognized for its work promoting sustainability to its employees, patients and the surrounding community. The EPA honored the hospital with the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year — Climate Communications Awards for NYPgreen, a unified sustainability program. NYPgreen promotes a number of sustainability initiatives including a green workspace program that rewards employees for saving energy, an external website with tips to reduce energy consumption, and hospital-wide Earth Day celebrations.

In addition to NewYork-Presbyterian's Partner of the Year honors, NewYork-Presbyterian/the Allen Hospital, one of NewYork-Presbyterian's six campuses, earned an EPA ENERGY STAR certification for 2014. The facility performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA. Commercial buildings that earn EPA's ENERGY STAR certification use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
