Caregiver Wellness Day at New York Methodist Hospital

May 23, 2007

Brooklyn, NY

New York Methodist Hospital's HealthOutreach Program and Leeza's Place at Park Slope Geriatric Day Center will host a Caregiver Wellness Day on Sunday, June 10, 2007, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Hospital's Executive Dining Room, 506 Sixth Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

The free event is aimed at providing support and rejuvenation for family caregivers who spend much of their time meeting the needs of sick and disabled loved ones. Event activities will include interactive workshops on stress reduction and meditation, Feldenkrais, Qigong, and nutrition.

NYM's HealthOutreach Program offers people over the age of 60 a variety of educational and social programs at no cost. The program gives its members personal one-on-one assistance with health care and insurance questions and offers a full agenda of activities to support their well-being. Monthly health lectures are held to educate and prepare seniors to handle health-related issues and health screenings are offered to help participants maintain good health.

Leeza's Place at Park Slope Geriatric Day Center is a partnership between the Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation and Park Slope Geriatric Day Center. Celebrity personality Leeza Gibbons started the foundation to meet the growing needs of those impacted by memory disorders. "All of us know that one of our greatest joys is taking care of loved ones. It is also one of the things that can put us at risk for a myriad of stress-related disorders," said Ms. Gibbons. "That's why we say it is important to 'take your oxygen first'; making sure as caregivers we nourish ourselves mind, body, spirit and soul. If we do this, all of those who depend on us will benefit as well."

Leeza's Place, the foundation's signature program, integrates educational approaches, connective social activities, emotional support, and intergenerational programming, and is dedicated to supporting the day-to-day needs of caregivers and the diagnosed.
