Patients who have survived and recovered from a stroke are at high risk for recurrence. At NewYork-Presbyterian, our cerebrovascular specialists are experts at treatments designed to reduce the risk of a second stroke. These treatments include medical therapies such as blood thinners, statins, and blood pressure medications. They can also include surgical procedures such as carotid endarterectomy (to remove a clot) and carotid artery angioplasty (to widen a narrow artery) in the carotid arteries of the neck; bypass revascularization (rerouting the blood supply to bypass the obstruction); or stenting (inserting a mesh tube into an artery to keep it open).
