NYP-Coronavirus COVID-19: What to Know

Long COVID

Resources for when COVID symptoms won't go away

Understanding Your Symptoms

Most people who have COVID-19 recover completely within two to three weeks. However, even if you did not spend time in the hospital, some people continue to not feel well, and have symptoms and complications related to COVID-19 long after their illness.

COVID-19 is mainly seen as a disease that affects the lungs. In reality, it can also affect many parts of the body.

Research shows that long COVID-19 symptoms may be caused by the body’s immune response lasting long after the illness has cleared. For this reason, in some, COVID-19 symptoms may be felt throughout the body long after the initial illness.

Long Covid Symptoms

The most common chronic post-COVID-19 symptoms seen in adults include:

  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • “Brain fog”—including memory loss and difficulty concentrating
  • Headache
  • Change in taste or smell
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Joint pain
  • Chest pain
  • Cough
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

Some people may also experience persistent heart issues and lung damage. These patients often had more severe cases of the disease.
