WHY CHOOSE US

Pioneers in Interventional Cardiology Therapies

NewYork-Presbyterian has been among the first institutions to pioneer and adopt the latest procedures and technologies in interventional cardiology.

Our interventional cardiologists perform these procedures through a catheter inserted in your groin or wrist after you have received a local anesthetic and sometimes a mild sedative. The catheter is advanced to the areas of your heart that need treatment. You may be able to go home the same day, or for more complex cases, spend one night in the hospital. You can usually return to your normal activities in just a day or two.

Our Expert Cardiac Catheterization Teams Offer:

Coronary artery angioplasty

Coronary artery angioplasty is a non-surgical procedure that widens a narrowed or blocked artery. A small balloon is inserted into the artery and inflated, forcing the blood vessel to expand and improving blood flow

Stenting

Stenting is a treatment where a mesh wire tube is inserted and expanded inside a blocked artery to strengthen and support the blood vessel

Atherectomy

Atherectomy is a minimally invasive procedure wherein a catheter is inserted into an artery with a small device that scrapes away the plaque buildup

Leading the Care of Complex Cases

Our cardiologist specializes in treating severe CAD in patients who are considered “high risk” known as Complex Higher-Risk and Indicated Patients (CHIP). We will evaluate each person as an individual and work with you to find a treatment that’s right for you

Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine and the director of the Center for Interventional Vascular Therapy (CIVT) at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, explains the structural heart program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia.
