Massage therapy is a wonderful addition to the current treatments you may be receiving. It promotes a sense of well-being and helps to balance your mind, body, and spirit.

Benefits of Massage Therapy

Massage therapy may be helpful for people with:

  • Anxiety
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer, for relieving some side effects
  • Depression
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Joint replacement
  • Low back pain and disc issues
  • Muscle soreness due to exercise
  • Neck pain
  • Osteoporosis
  • Sports injuries
  • Stress

We also offer massage for pregnant women.

How Massage Therapy Works

Massage improves the flow of lymph through the lymphatic system, improves circulation, and breaks up connective tissue (myofascial) adhesions. It can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and reduce the swelling (edema) after surgery.

Specialized Massage Training

At Integrative Health and Wellbeing at NewYork-Presbyterian, our licensed massage therapist offers:

  • Deep tissue massage. Massage of the deeper layers of your muscles, tendons, and ligaments to release tension and improve circulation.
  • Reiki. A gentle laying of the hands on or just above you, with the goal of facilitating your own healing response.
  • Foot reflexology. Pressure applied to specific energy points on the feet to achieve benefit elsewhere in the body.

The massage therapist has special training in a variety of massage therapy techniques, such as prenatal massage and oncology massage (for people with cancer).

What You Can Expect

  • The massage therapist will discuss your medical history and your current health with you, and target your specific symptoms or areas of need.
  • She tailors the massage to the needs of each of our patients, such as using lighter pressure on people who may bruise easily due to the chemotherapy medications they are taking.
  • You dress down to your level of comfort. Reiki and reflexology are options for people who are more comfortable leaving their clothes on.
