As staff and patients of New York Methodist Hospital (NYM) switched on their televisions Tuesday morning, there was a shared sense of disbelief and grief at the havoc that Hurricane Sandy had brought to New York City. Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers without power; catastrophic damage and flooding in each of the five boroughs; friends and family whose houses were leveled by the storm.

New York Methodist Hospital's (NYM) repertoire of minimally invasive bariatric (weight-loss) procedures recently expanded to include laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), an advanced surgical technique designed to help morbidly obese patients lose weight. In 2010, New York Methodist Hospital (NYM) launched the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Center, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the treatment of wounds that, for various reasons, have not healed properly with standard medical care. Two years later, with hundreds of patients treated, NYM has announced that, in 2012 alone, the Center logged a 90 percent success rate in healing the previously “unhealable” wounds of Wound Care Center patients. The Center features a staff of wound care experts, as well as advanced, non-surgical options for healing wounds, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

New York Methodist Hospital (NYM) now offers advanced treatment for Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous condition commonly associated with acid reflux. The new treatment greatly reduces the chances that a patient with Barrett’s esophagus will ultimately develop cancer.

To achieve the Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award, and also gain a place on the Target: Stroke Honor Roll, is no small feat. The awards are sponsored by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA), and only one out of nine New York City hospitals received each for 2012.
