For the first time, researchers have laid bare the full genetic blueprint of multiple prostate tumors, uncovering alterations that have never before been detected and offering a deep view of the genetic missteps that underlie the disease. The study, made possible by key advances in whole genome sequencing and analysis, points to several new prostate cancer genes and a critical category of genomic changes as important drivers of prostate cancer growth. The work was led by researchers from Weill Cornell Medical College, the Broad Institute, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and appears in the Feb. 10th issue of the journal Nature.

An intricate procedure that finds and carefully removes individual sperm from testicular tissue has made fathers of men who were once considered sterile due to prior cancer treatment, say researchers at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center who pioneered the technique.

Dr. Frank A. Chervenak, the Given Foundation Professor and chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Weill Cornell Medical College and obstetrician and gynecologist-in-chief and director of maternal-fetal medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, has been elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies. The new Alexandra and Steven Cohen Pediatric Emergency Department at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center opens today, significantly expanding access to the highest level of emergency pediatric care for families in the region.
