Dr. Mark M. Souweidane, an internationally recognized leader in pediatric neurosurgery, has been appointed the inaugural surgeon-iDr. Mark M. Souweidane, an internationally recognized leader in pediatric neurosurgery, has been appointed the inaugural surgeon-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital of Children’s Hospital of New York. This newly created role reflects NewYork-Presbyterian’s commitment to advancing pediatric surgical care. Dr. Souweidane will continue to serve as vice chair of neurological surgery and director of pediatric neurosurgery at Weill Cornell Medicine.

As surgeon-in-chief, Dr. Souweidane will lead pediatric operative services across NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital of Children’s Hospital of New York and drive operational excellence in its clinical programs, focusing on quality, patient safety, and the patient and family experience. He will champion growth and innovation, enhance operational efficiency, and expand clinical trials across surgical disciplines.

In his three decades with NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine, Dr. Souweidane has pioneered innovative surgical treatment for children with brain tumors including transventricular endoscopy (a minimally invasive procedure used to access and treat lesions within the brain’s ventricles), direct drug delivery that bypasses the blood-brain barrier, and laser therapy, which uses heat to destroy abnormal brain cells. His work continues to transform surgical care for children worldwide. At NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine, he directs one of the nation’s leading pediatric neurosurgery programs and has trained generations of surgeons through a nationally accredited fellowship program.

Dr. Souweidane completed his undergraduate training at the University of Michigan, where he graduated with distinction in microbiology. He attended Wayne State University Medical School, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, and completed his general surgery internship at University of Michigan Hospital, followed by his neurosurgery residency at New York University. He served as the chief clinical fellow for pediatric neurosurgery at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Dr. Souweidane serves on the steering committee of the Children's Oncology Group, is an associate editor for the journal Neuro-Oncology Pediatrics, and is a member of the Professional Advisory Board of the Children's Brain Tumor Foundation. His dedication to serving the NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine communities has earned him numerous recognitions, including Michels Family Endowed Professorship of Pediatric Neurological Surgery, the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Mentorship, an Alumni Honorary Fellowship Award, and the Excellence in Medical Education Award.
