NEW YORK

For the twelfth straight year, NewYork-Presbyterian has more physicians listed in New York Magazine's prestigious "Best Doctors" annual survey than any other hospital. The magazine lists 198 NewYork-Presbyterian physicians — representing 17 percent of the 1,160 New York metro-–area doctors listed.

This year's issue also features 11 profiles of 2012 medical college graduates representing Weill Cornell Medical College and Columbia University College of Physician and Surgeons, the medical schools affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian — the only hospital in the nation affiliated with two leading Ivy League medical schools.

As part of the launch of a new weekly New York feature "Ask a Best Doctor," Dr. Marianne Legato, an internist, and Dr. Desiree Ratner, director of the melanoma center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, are among the top doctors who responded to health and wellness queries from the magazine's readers.

The "Best Doctors" issue is on newsstands today. For the full list of physicians and ranking methodology, visit nymag.com/bestdoctors.

Who Picks the "Best Doctors"?

According to New York Magazine: "A New York City research and information company, Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., publishes an annual guidebook titled Top Doctors: New York Metro Area, which lists those whom Castle Connolly has determined to be in the top 10 percent of the region's physicians — more than 5,600 in all. For the past 15 years, Castle Connolly has been providing New York Magazine with a shorter version of this list for the magazine's "Best Doctors" issue. Space prohibits New York from publishing the full list; this year the doctors on the list number 1,160. Castle Connolly conducts a peer-review survey. The idea is that medical professionals are best qualified to judge other medical professionals, and if one recommendation is good (think of your doctor referring you to a specialist), multiple recommendations are better. Licensed physicians vote online (castleconnolly.com/nominations) for those they view as exceptional. For the complete "Best Doctors" list, visit the magazine's website nymag.com/bestdoctors.
