Weight management services we offer
Successful weight loss begins with care tailored to you. We work with you on personal goals, health history, and individual needs to develop the most effective treatment plan – which may include a range of surgical and nonsurgical options.
Our surgical experts perform weight loss procedures using robotic-assisted, minimally invasive, and laparoscopic techniques, resulting in less pain and quicker recovery times.
- Gastric bypass surgery: This procedure reduces the stomach to the size of an egg, restricting the amount of food that can be eaten at one time. A portion of the small intestine is also bypassed, decreasing the amount of calories and fat that can be absorbed.
- Gastric balloons: Gastric balloons (also called intragastric or stomach balloons) are temporary, removable devices that are placed in the stomach by endoscopy (through the mouth) and can remain for up to six months.
- Laparoscopic gastric banding (Lap band or Realize Band): An adjustable band is placed around the stomach to create a small pouch above the stomach. The tightness of the band is adjusted, controlling the passage of food between the two parts of the stomach, to give the patient a faster feeling of fullness that lasts longer after eating.
- Sleeve gastrectomy: This procedure reduces the size of the stomach to the shape of a banana, so the patient feels full after eating less. The surgery also removes the portion of the stomach that produces the hunger hormone, ghrelin. Unlike gastric bypass, this procedure doesn’t involve rerouting or reconnecting the intestines.
Today, the market offers a choice of several weight loss medications. Pending eligibility, your healthcare team can help choose the right one. Medication may be an appropriate option if:
- Lifestyle changes (diet/exercise) haven’t lowered your BMI below 30.
- You don’t qualify for weight loss surgery.
- You had weight loss surgery but didn’t meet your weight loss goal.
- Your BMI remains at 27+ despite lifestyle changes, and you have weight-related conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or sleep apnea.
- Bariatric (weight loss) surgery support groups. These meetings are open to anyone dealing with weight issues. Attendees will discover what to expect after surgery, how to incorporate new and important dietary restrictions, and find support from others who’ve been on the same journey. Meetings occur monthly and are free and open to the public.
- Weight Loss Preparation. These meetings are meant to prepare you for your weight loss journey and offer an opportunity to hear from other patients. Family and friends are encouraged to attend.
- Body Contouring Surgery. Once patients have reached their stable weight, we offer them body contouring procedures in collaboration with our plastic surgery colleagues at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
- Sleep Apnea support. Many obese patients are at risk for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Our team can offer solutions to this common but often overlooked component of weight management.
- Nutritional support. Cooking demonstrations and nutritional support are given at our renowned Chef Peter X. Kelly Teaching Kitchen to assist in changing your eating habits before and after surgery.
