Specialized care for sleep disorders

The Center for Sleep Disorders at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility designed to treat a range of sleep disorders and provide a relaxing and comfortable environment for patients. It was the first hospital-based sleep center in Brooklyn to receive accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Because sleeping disorders can be brought on by lung, cardiac, neurologic, and psychiatric disorders, NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital has brought together specialists from many disciplines to evaluate, diagnose, and treat sleep disorders in people of all ages. Pediatric sleep disorders and breathing disorders during sleep are among the most common issues parents of young children may face. These disorders can result in learning and behavioral disabilities and long-term pulmonary, endocrine, and heart disease. Obtaining a diagnosis and managing sleep problems early on may help children with development and growth.

The Pediatric Sleep and Breathing Disorders Center

Our dedicated Pediatric Sleep Center offers comprehensive services for children, starting at age one. Our interdisciplinary team includes physicians, sleep technologists, sleep health educators, and a board-certified behavioral sleep medicine psychologist who specializes in non-drug insomnia management. We treat a range of common to complex conditions, such as:

  • Obstructive and central sleep apnea
  • Snoring
  • Apnea of infancy
  • Behavioral insomnia of childhood such as bedtime struggles and night awakenings
  • Parasomnias (sleep walking, sleep terrors)
  • Narcolepsy
  • Circadian rhythm disorders (delayed sleep phase syndrome)
  • Movement disorders (periodic limb movement disorder, head banging)

Our team can also aid in the evaluation and management of children with chronic lung diseases, degenerative muscle disease with chronic respiratory failure, hypoventilation syndrome, and respiratory control disorders.

Symptoms & treatment of sleep disorders

A good night's sleep is important for one’s overall health and well-being. Unfortunately, many people are not getting the sleep they need because of a sleep disorder. Approximately 40 million Americans suffer from some kind of sleep disorder. Sleep disorders can lead to sleep deprivation, resulting in significant health issues and a compromised quality of life. Our experts are here to help you get a better night’s sleep.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of sleep disorders include:

  • Snoring so loudly that the sleep of others is disturbed
  • Frequent cessation of breathing during the night
  • Falling asleep on short drives or in social situations, or difficulty staying awake at work or school
  • Difficulty falling asleep or frequently waking night after night; losing hope that sleep will be normal again
Our treatment approach

Patients will meet with our team of experienced sleep disorder specialists to review symptoms and the patient's medical history. After an initial evaluation, we will discuss with you whether a sleep study may help diagnose the problem.

When a sleep study is indicated, patients often spend one or two nights sleeping in a room in our comfortable facility adjacent to our main hospital campus. During the sleep study, brain patterns, heart activity, breathing, and muscle movement will be monitored. A sleep technologist is nearby throughout the night. We also offer comprehensive home sleep testing.

The Center for Sleep Disorders provides the necessary diagnostic and medical care for all sleep problems, including insomnia or sleeplessness, restless legs syndrome (RLS), snoring, sleep apnea, shift work sleep disorder (SWSD), narcolepsy, sleepwalking, and others. The Center for Sleep Disorders can provide treatment for sleep disorders in support of virtually any work schedule. Treatment can include lifestyle adjustment, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), medication, nighttime breathing masks, and more. We aim to address the sleep disorder and any potential underlying causes, both immediately and with long-term follow-up care.
