In many hospitals, heart and lung surgeries are done by the same surgeons. At NYP Brooklyn Methodist, we have specialists who do only cardiac surgery and others who focus only on thoracic surgery. In addition, at all heart surgeries, two board-certified cardiac surgeons work together on each patient.

Leadership in Cardiac Surgical Procedures
Cardiac surgeons at NYP Brooklyn Methodist perform an expansive range of cardiac procedures, including:
- Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), including multiple arteria grafting.
- Valve repair and replacement, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
- Aneurysm repair.
- Arrhythmia ablation.
- Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR).
- Implantation of assist devices for the failing heart.
We have special expertise in advanced coronary artery grafting using a technique called multiple arterial grafting. Our surgeons and physician assistants are leaders in the field, with special expertise in radial artery grafting—a procedure which results in better long-term outcomes.
ECMO: Lifesaving Support for Failing Hearts
NYP Brooklyn Methodist is one of the few hospitals in Brooklyn that offers extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a way to artificially supply oxygen-rich blood to the body when the heart and lungs are incapable of doing so. A cardiac surgeon inserts a tube into the patient's femoral vein. Blood is then removed and oxygenated via an external device, and then returned to the body via the femoral artery. ECMO can be used to support circulation and respiration in the body until the heart and lungs regain normal function, and can also be used to support patients with severe heart failure who will be receiving a ventricular assist device (VAD).
Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery
Our thoracic surgeons provide comprehensive care for people with diseases of the lung, trachea, esophagus, chest wall, and mediastinum (the middle section of the chest cavity). Our team has particular expertise in surgery for:
- Lung cancer

- Esophageal cancer
- Achalasia (a swallowing disorder)
- Tracheal stenosis (narrowing of the airway)
- Hiatal hernia
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

Most of our patients are able to have minimally invasive thoracic surgery, which results in less blood loss, smaller incisions, less postoperative discomfort, a shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to their normal activities. We are able to perform some of these procedures robotically, including the removal of lung and esophageal cancers.
