NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center has established a new Prostate Cancer Institute, dedicated to pursuing aggressive and innovative prostate cancer treatments while providing patient care in a comfortable and compassionate setting. Dr. Ashutosh Tewari, a leading robotic urologic surgeon, has been appointed as its director.

Three patients at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center were among the first in the United States to be implanted with a next-generation artificial heart pump called the DuraHeart™ Left-Ventricular Assist System. The surgeries took place earlier this year. NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia is one of only three centers in the U.S. currently enrolling patients in a clinical trial studying the device.

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital now offers the revolutionary new CYPHER® Coronary Stent, the first drug-coated stent to receive approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of blocked coronary arteries. The new stent, which was approved on April 24, dramatically decreases the likelihood of restenosis, or re-blockage, of the coronary artery.

A new study, led by physician-scientists at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and the Hospital for Special Surgery, finds that atherosclerosis (arterial plaque) occurs prematurely and more commonly in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus).

Six surgical transplant teams, including 40 clinicians, working simultaneously in six operating rooms successfully performed New York City's first three-way kidney transplant at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia. Three patients, who otherwise had no compatible donor, received lifesaving kidneys.

One hundred and one newly minted M.D.'s (including 53 women and 21 members of historically underrepresented minorities) will receive their diplomas today at the commencement exercises of the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
