Dr. Massimo Loda, an internationally renowned molecular pathologist, has been appointed chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and pathologist-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, effective Feb. 1.

The 20th annual “HealthCare’s Most Wired” survey, released by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), has recognized NewYork-Presbyterian as one of the nation’s “Most Wired” hospitals of 2018.

Dr. Dan Landau, an assistant professor of medicine and of physiology and biophysics at Weill Cornell Medicine and a core member of the New York Genome Center, has received a New Innovator Award from the National Institutes of Health for his research on how tumor cells evolve and acquire new mutations to evade cancer therapies.

In a phase three clinical trial, a drug called sorafenib stopped progression of desmoid tumors for two years in 80 percent of patients who completed treatment, a significant increase in progression-free survival compared with placebo. (Progression-free survival is the length of time a patient lives without worsening of the disease).

Older adults with cancer are nearly 70 percent more likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack in the year prior to their diagnosis compared with peers without a cancer diagnosis in that same time period, according to new research by Weill Cornell Medicine, NewYork-Presbyterian, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center investigators.
