NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is celebrating the 25th anniversary of pediatric heart transplantation. In 1984, the Hospital's surgeons performed the world's first successful heart transplant, giving the gift of life to a 4-year-old boy. In the intervening quarter century, more than 350 children have received new hearts at the Hospital, which today has among the country's top three largest pediatric heart transplant programs.

Demonstrating the overlapping benefits of healing and good environmental stewardship, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital now uses cleaning chemicals that are certified as safer for humans and for the great outdoors.

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center was honored with an "Environmental Excellence Award" in recognition of its sustainable practices and efforts to improve the environment — including recycling, composting and energy efficiency.

After completing a yearlong asthma education program, 45 families are graduating with the tools they need to control their child's asthma, preventing acute episodes that can lead to emergency room visits and missed school days. The WIN (Washington Heights–Inwood Network) for Asthma Program at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital serves families in northern Manhattan, where the childhood asthma rate is four times the national average.

Growing evidence shows that surgery may effectively cure Type 2 diabetes — an approach that not only may change the way the disease is treated, but that introduces a new way of thinking about diabetes.

In recognition of their humanitarian work to enhance medicine through the training of physicians in emerging countries, Dr. Antonio M. Gotto Jr., the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean of Weill Cornell Medical College, and Dr. Herbert Pardes, president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, were awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class.

As many as half of patients with superficial bladder cancer do not respond to the standard first-line chemotherapy placed into the bladder, according to current multi-center outcomes data. When this happens, typically, their only option is surgical removal of the bladder. Now, researchers at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center are investigating an FDA-approved metastatic breast-cancer drug called Abraxane® that may prove a safe and effective alternative to surgery for these patients.

A leader in recent research on the interaction of genes and environment in the development of psychiatric illness, Avshalom Caspi, Ph.D. of King's College London, has been awarded the Mortimer D. Sackler, M.D., Prize for Distinguished Achievement in Developmental Psychobiology. Presented jointly by the Sackler Institute for Development Psychobiology at Columbia University Medical Center and the Sackler Institute for Developmental Psychobiology at Weill Cornell Medical College, the $60,000 award honors the 90th birthday of Dr. Sackler, and was established through gifts by his seven children.
