For patients with a dangerous enlargement of heart muscle called left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), the drug Losartan beats standard beta-blocker therapy in reducing hearts to a healthier size, according to researchers at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Diabetics who have certain abnormalities on an electrocardiogram (ECG) a measure of the heart's electrical activity are much more likely to die in a five-year period than their peers who have normal ECG results, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center physician-scientists report in the February issue of the journal Diabetes.

Electrocardiograms, which are performed by attaching electrodes to the chest, are one of the easiest and most common heart tests given to patients.

Within minutes of a stroke or other brain injury, neurons begin to die, a process that is followed by a cascade of further cell death, due in part to proteins released from injured cells. Current treatment thresholds for preventing osteoporosis-related bone fracture in postmenopausal women were evaluated in a study authored by a physician-scientist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and published in the May 24 issue of The Archives of Internal Medicine. The study found that a significant percentage of the 149,524 postmenopausal women enrolled in the National Osteoporosis Risk Assessment (NORA), experienced bone fractures despite having tested with a bone mineral density (BMD) outside of the risk parameters defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF).
