Philips Recall Notice

Dear Valued Patient:

Philips recently released a recall regarding their CPAP, BiPAP machines and home ventilators. Please note that this recall applies only to the actual machines, not masks.  A complete list of impacted Philips products and information is available here: www.philips.com/src-update

There are some immediate steps you should take regarding this recall:

  1. Please check your device to see if the manufacturer is Philips (previously Respironics) or ResMed. The ResMed units are not included in this recall and no further action is needed. Devices from other manufactures are also not affected by the recall.

  2. In case your machine is affected, you should register your device at  https://www.philipssrcupdate.expertinquiry.com/registration and contact the supplier or home care company that provided you with the unit to discuss the replacement or repair of your machine. If your machine is more than 5 years old, you may be eligible to have it replaced using your insurance.

  3. If you are a commercial driver or machine operator, please contact your clinician to obtain a letter of medical necessity for your insurance and consider continuing CPAP/BiPAP therapy until a solution is available or refrain from performing activities that require sustained vigilance.

  4. If you use a life-sustaining home ventilator, do not stop therapy and please contact your supplier to obtain a filter as recommended by Phillips.

  5. For patients younger than 18 please discuss with your clinician if it is safe to discontinue therapy.

We do not yet know the full extent of health concerns regarding the Philips recall. Philips has recommended not stopping or altering therapy if you have a home ventilator; but has recommended discontinuing use of the affected CPAP or BiPAP machines.  With severe sleep apnea, you may choose to continue treatment, as the risk of untreated sleep apnea may be significant, including, but not limited to, daytime sleepiness. If you have mild to moderate sleep apnea, you may choose to pause treatment until a replacement unit is available. If you do choose to pause your CPAP/BiPAP therapy, consider sleeping on your side or with the head of the bed elevated.

In the interim, you may opt to purchase a CPAP/BiPAP unit from a different manufacturer to continue your CPAP/BiPAP treatment. Please note that this may not be covered by insurance. Contact your clinician if a prescription is needed.

We will share updates on this recall after they become available. Please visit www.nyp.org/philipsrecall for the latest information.
